Recruiters work with dozens, sometimes hundreds, of candidates at a time, so the way you communicate can make a lasting impression. Consultants also say that they want candidates to “keep in touch”; but what does that actually mean?
Here’s how you can stay in their mind without being overbearing.
Where to write to your recruiter
In this digital age, you likely first heard about your recruiter online. How did you first communicate with them? If it was by email and they list email addresses on their website, write to them via email. If you first communicated with them via LinkedIn, a message on that platform is also an acceptable means of communication.
While we love our candidates and clients to just pick up the phone, we realise that a spontaneous phone call can feel a little imposing out of the blue. Our best recommendation is to take your cues from the recruiter; observe how they communicate with you and mirror that style and platform.
How often you should write to your recruiter
“Not too often” doesn’t mean never! If you have no updates for them, messaging once every month or so is a great way to keep you on their radar without bombarding them. If you do have relevant news, we recommend messaging them a few days after the event. Consistency is key!
When to followup
If you didn’t write with a specific question, don’t expect your recruiter to always respond. If you did have a question for them and it wasn’t urgent, we recommend waiting at least two weeks.
Ultimately, recruiters want to see you engaged, professional, and proactive without being pushy. Be patient for their response, and don’t call them repeatedly or message across multiple platforms at once.
What to write in your message to your recruiter
Here are some common reasons to write to your recruiter:
- Informing them of a new job: Recruiters always want to know if you’re “off the market” for the time being!
- Telling them about completed accreditation or certifications: Let them know when you’ve gained new qualifications or credentials that may enhance your profile.
- Substantial updates to your CV: Highlight any new experience, achievements, or projects that make you a stronger candidate.
- Interviews or other press material related to you: Share any media coverage, speaking engagements, or thought-leadership pieces that strengthen your professional brand.
If you are just checking in with your recruiter, we suggest informing them of the projects you have been working on and where you see yourself professionally in the next few months.
Message essentials for your recruiter
We go into cover letters in detail in our dedicated article. For followup messages, remember that recruitment consultants are busy people and expert scanners! Make it easy for them to find why you’re writing with short, clear, polite, full sentences. Avoid emojis to keep your messaging crystal clear.
Always include your name and, ideally, any identifying information connected with your past communication with your recruitment consultant so that they can easily remind themselves who you are.
Communicate with them on social media
Communicating with your recruiter on social media isn’t obligatory, but it is a great way to stay on their radar. Liking or commenting on their posts on LinkedIn, Instagram, or whichever social media platform they use is a good way to build long-term ‘soft’ relationships with your recruiter that relieve you from one-on-one communication.
What your recruiter doesn’t like you to do
Recruitment consultants are responsible for promoting a realistic picture of their candidates, and they won’t appreciate you exaggerating your experience, as it doesn’t reflect well on them (or you)!
Remember also that communication goes both ways! If your recruiter asks you for information, try not to leave more than three days for your response. And finally: Be kind and respectful in your communication. We understand that the job search process can be stressful, but maintaining professionalism and courtesy will always leave a positive impression.
